Why Montenegro

Did you know that Montenegro is just 14,000 square kilometres? It’s actually one of the smallest countries in the world…. In fact, you could fit 18 Montenegros into the UK!! But for such a small place it packs an almighty punch and we’re here to tell you why…..

Well first up the sheer diversity of the landscape here is enough to blow anyone’s mind. Impressively boasting being home to the largest canyon in Europe – and the second largest in the world -, having no less than 4 world heritage sites – with another 6 pending -, boasting the longest beach on the Adriatic coast, as well as one of the last remaining rainforests in Europe, not to mention jaw-dropping mountains, 18 glacial lakes (yes glacial lakes!) crystal clear seas and a great culinary scene its no wonder that tourism here is on the rise.

And the great thing about Montenegros’ small size is that you get to pack a lot into a vacation here. We can’t think of a better trip than splitting your time between the gorgeous mountains inland, which the country is actually named after, and spending some time on the water, of which there is no better place than the Bay of Kotor, and that’s where we come in!  Sailing around the bay is a great way of soaking up the culture in some of the most beautiful towns in the Balkans, with each offering something different for the discerning traveller, and from our base in Porto Montenegro we’re ideally located to sail you to the highlights of this spectacular UNESCO heritage area. Kotor is bound to create lasting memories for anyone travelling here, a gorgeously picturesque town, which is famous for its well-preserved medieval architecture and striking city walls. The walls were built in the 19th century and stretch almost 5 kilometres, but if you don’t quite have the energy to climb the 1350 steps to the top, then the views in the evening as the Venetian fortifications are softly illuminated are equally as beautiful.

Herceg Novi is another destination high on our charts, its Venetian influence evident throughout the town in the quaint palazzos and architecture. Kani Kula or the bloody fortress, was built by the Turks in Herceg Novi in 1539, and not only are the views from the tower magnificent but these days the fortress also houses an open-air amphitheatre, showcasing some great Montenegrin cultural events throughout the year. After that perhaps a stop at Gradska Pijaca market to refuel with some local delicacies or a gentle stroll along the café lined promenade, which offers a wide choice of places to stop for a coffee and watch the world go by.

But its not all about the bay and, time permitting, who doesn’t want to explore more of the 295 kilometres of coastline here and continue to Budva? Budva is one of the best beach destinations in the country and really does have something for everyone. The medieval old town dates back more than 2000 years and is the perfect place to get lost, meandering among its atmospheric cobbled streets. But the town also offers a complete contrast with its lively nightlife and open air bars along the harbour. Oh and to get there? We’ll sail down the stunning ‘Budva Riviera’, a stretch of coastline boasting sheltered coves, sandy beaches and craggy rocks formations, not to mention the infamous Sveti Stefan, an iconic ‘tombolo’, which is an island connected to the mainland via a sand spit. An island so beautiful its image has become synonymous with the country itself.
